Garrett and Greg took off last week for another fly fishing adventure...I'm not even sure they stayed in Utah. They are not telling anyone where they went or the rivers they fished to catch such incredible fish..it's a secret. He's been fishing for many years and on many rivers to find such a spot. I think it was last year they found this treasure and so far are not telling a soul. Before the first fly fishing expedition of the year, Garrett chooses a hat to be his fishing hat for the whole year...he has been through so many I've lost count. He's had orange ones in the past...they have been some of my favorites.Friday I got a text from Garrett saying he had caught the biggest trout of his life...24 inches and probably 8 lbs...
I was thrilled that he was catching fish. Fishing is one thing he can do that takes his mind off everything - where he can really enjoy all this world has to offer and only concentrate on where his fly is landing and where the fish are hiding...Last night, as we all sat on the deck eating brownies and ice cream, he told us of his fishing adventures from the trip. The kids laughed as he told stories of funny people he met along the banks of the rivers, but they were silently enthralled as he began telling how he hooked the biggest trout ever. He told us how he cast the line out, and almost as quickly as the fly hit the water, a trout surfaced and took it...he set the hook and the fish jumped 4 feet out of the water, then tried to swim away. He began bringing in the line with his rod bending hard...the fish jumped out of the water again as he carefully reeled him safely into the net. All the while, some Frenchmen fishing that same stretch of river were yelling "Feesh, feesh." A few pictures and a kiss before releasing him back into the river for the next lucky fly fisherman. This isn't the hog that Garrett caught - just one of the many he hooked...An incredible days work - oh, to be so lucky!
A few Alaska favorites from years past...
